This redesign project set out to study a recent aviation accident (Air France 447 accident in 2009) and analyze the role of the primary flight display in contributing to a series of errors that ultimately resulted in the irrecoverable tragedy. With in-depth examination and analysis, my team and I studied the deficiencies in the current primary flight display design. We conducted expert interviews to better understand the complexities and the challenges in aviation system design. We further conceptualized and prototyped a primary flight display design with a new interaction model to provide pilots better real-time visual information and system status to lower the risk of errors in judgement especially during high-stress adverse flight conditions. Finally, we articulated and presented our design concept to reviewers/stakeholders.
